Summer 2024 at Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County

As we move into colder weather, we reflect on another amazing summer at Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County.

Fort Lupton Summer Highlights

Staff members at the Ft. Lupton Clubhouse took members on field trips 2-3 times each week. Field trips included indoor rock climbing, the Denver Aquarium, the Denver Zoo, Sonflower Ranch, the Greeley Train Museum, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the new splash pad in Ft. Lupton, and local parks around the area. The indoor rock climbing wall was the biggest hit and will be a trip that the kids will have to do in years to come!

In January of 2022, the members of the Ft. Lupton Clubhouse were asked to help participate in the designing process for the new splash pad in Fort Lupton. Because the members helped with this, they were all invited to the grand opening/ribbon-cutting event that took place in June of this year. The Clubhouse Director, MaKayla Heid, was present to make connections with individual leaders throughout the community and even got convinced by all the present club members to get on the newest piece of playground equipment that required the kids to spin MaKayla in continuous circles until she was too dizzy to stand back up.

Fort Morgan Summer Highlights

Multiple organizations came together at the clubhouse on June 7th for the Fort Morgan Clubhouse Summer Kick-off where they had booths, activities, and goodies for the members and their families. According to the members, the best part was the cotton candy. During summer club when the members weren’t enjoying the Around the World curriculum in programming, they were having fun at field trips on Fridays. They went to the movies, ice cream shop, Sheriff’s Office, and Fire Department, scavenger hunt at Library Park, and more.

Towards the end of every day, the members would attend clubs, which included Break Dancing, College Stem, Yoga, Crocheting, Cheerleading, Advanced Sports, and No-Bake Cooking. All these clubs were run by BGC staff or volunteers. The summer ended with the Fort Morgan Clubhouse Summer Olympics which included Physical sports and Brain Games on Thursday and a water fight with the Fire Department on Friday.

Pawl Clubhouse Summer Highlights

At the Jerry Pawl Unit, summer days were full of building and sustaining relationships with club members. They created ever-lasting relationships with club members, and focused on what our young people wanted to do. They had a lot of spectacular ideas such as going out into our community and cleaning up around our schools, with a special focus on the playgrounds. Even through the sweltering heat, Pawl members enjoyed going on hikes alongside their club peers. Members even participated in a day focused on our Earth where staff facilitated programs around saving our planet. Pawl Members made the most of all the fun programs and activities that were provided.

Some of the most memorable moments included Hair Styling, Balloon Animals, and Water/Field Day. The youth were excited about hiking and took a hiking trip every other week. Hair Styling was very popular as many of our club members, boys and girls, enjoyed being pampered. The younger kids absolutely loved the Balloon Animals! As always, our Water/Field Day was a huge hit, club members were counting down the days to this annual event.

Art & Martie Barker Clubhouse Summer Highlights

It was a fun-filled summer at the Art & Martie Barker Clubhouse in Milliken. Club members were able to take part in many fun field trips including SonFlower Ranch, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Denver Aquarium.

Although they had fun outside of the club this summer, they also had so many exciting things happen inside the club! One specific highlight was when Crusty the Uncrustable came to visit, and even hand out free Uncrustables to the members. A huge thank you to Uncrustables for making this a possibility for our Club Kids. Another memorable moment was made possible by the girls basketball team from Pioneer Ridge. They came to the Milliken Clubhouse to host a a girls basketball day camp, and the members that participated had an amazing time.

Galeton Clubhouse Summer Highlights

The Galeton Clubhouse also had a very memorable summer, beginning with our friends from the Eaton Library! They came to the Galeton Clubhouse to do various activities over the summer, including a LEGO STEM Challenge. This challenge had our members build a Lego bridge that could hold 5 books without breaking. Another memorable activity they provided was an electricity and space presentation that the members absolutely loved. It was great seeing our members explore activities like STEM to fall in love with science!

Galeton members had fun attending different and new field trips over the summer. According to the kids, their favorite field trips included the movies, Denver Zoo, roller skating, bowling, rock climbing, and more. At the end of summer, Galeton held a field day filled with different field day activities. The kids enjoyed playing different water games, beach volleyball, tug of war, and more. The Galeton Clubhouse celebrated the end of summer club with a day of pizza and ice cones from KONA ICE.

Teen Center Summer Highlights

Teen Center summer 2024 brought a wealth of memories, new friends, field trips, and fun activities for the Teens of Weld County to enjoy. Teens within the county got to experience field trips all around Colorado to places they usually would not have been able to go to or have access to.

The Cafe within the club was very popular amongst the Teens where they got to learn how to be a barista, take orders and brew coffee. While that was a big hit, the Teens had arguably more fun when they got to order and enjoy the coffee. Austina Burns, Director of Teen Services explains, "Seeing all the different backgrounds of teenagers across the county get to know each other and build friendships and relationships was the most powerful part of the summer."

Monfort Clubhouse Summer Highlights

The Monfort Clubhouse had a wonderful summer 2024! Some activities they incorporated this were relay races, scavenger hunts, and pre and post test for grant-funded programming. Each week the Monfort Clubhouse focused on teaching members a different sport like basketball, volleyball, soccer, and baseball. Their main goal this summer was to stay as active as possible, and of course have fun! According to the members, they enjoyed playing kickball and baseball games every Friday with the Pawl Clubhouse. This activity gave Monfort Club Members a chance to get out of the building, have fun and meet other members outside of their clubhouse.

They also had a Nutrition Program. Each week, Ellie Dudley would provide Nutrition items for the members to make followed by a lesson plan. Some of the member's favorites were fruit pizzas, rice cakes, yogurt and pineapple. They enjoyed tasting the different colored apples and voting on their favorite one. Fun Fridays were also a huge hit for Monfort Members! They took part in great theme days including Disney Day, "SummerWeen", Water Day, Monfort Olympics, and Kid Coachella!

Thanks for another great summer!
